Jones was born in Memphis, Tennessee on December 19, 1868. He earned a BA from Arkansas College in 1888, then attended Union Theological Seminary of Virginia from 1888-1890. He was ordained in Arkansas Presbytery in 1890, and served as a pastor in Batesville while he earned his MA at Arkansas College (1892). In 1895 Jones moved to San Antonio where he became pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, a post he held until 1921 when he moved to Austin to teach at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary (1921-1927). Jones became ill in 1927, moved back to San Antonio, and died there on May 1, 1929.

Jones published several works, including “TR Sampson – A Memoir,” John Calvin – The Man, The Times, The Historic Significance,” and “Presbyterianism.” Other degrees earned by Jones include a DD (1903) and LLD (1923) from Arkansas College; a DD (1903) from Daniel Baker College; and an LLD (1923) from Austin College.

Jones was married to Irene Jeanette Long from January 1891 until her death in 1894, and then to Anne McDugald Hicks from December 1897 until his death. He had one son, Arthur L. Jones, who did not survive to adulthood.
