Dare to Adventure
Dare to Adventure tells the inspiring story of Jorge Lara-Braud (1931-2008), an internationally recognized Mexican-American minister, a history professor at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and the first director of the Hispanic American Institute in Austin. As a boy, Jorge escaped an impoverished life in a Mexico City barrio and grew up to become a champion of social justice. The book, authored by his wife, Gretchen Lara-Shartle, chronicles the life of this remarkable theologian. She details Jorge's work in opening people’s hearts and building bridges between divided communities, including Anglos and Hispanics, Catholics and Protestants. She also highlights Jorge's powerful collaboration with Salvadoran Archbishop Óscar Romero. Together, they protested the atrocities perpetrated by the United States-backed Salvadoran military.
Join us as we celebrate Jorge Lara-Braud's life, work, and vision, with readings from Dare to Adventure and a panel discussion moderated by former NPR correspondent John Burnett, followed by a book signing, refreshments, and fellowship.
