Tending the Soul of a Community: A Workshop on Storytelling for Communities of Faith

“The power of Community Storytelling provides faith leaders with practical tools that draw individuals and communities together in meaningful and healing ways.”

–Shannon Savage-Howe, 2019 participant

How do we tend the soul of our faith communities in the midst of a pandemic, unstable political leadership, unmasking of racial discrimination, and unprecedented change? As the routines and habits of our congregations are dismantled, how can we remember and retell the foundational stories that will bind our communities to their core values and to one another? How can the stories we tell reveal the shimmering goodness that will carry us forward? In this unique workshop we will explore the sacred power of stories to heal, connect, enrich, and mobilize communities for good. Through experiential exercises, individual skill-building, spiritual practice, and theological reflection we will learn how stories can be a radical and deeply spiritual practice for strengthening relationships, raising up common values, and inspiring compassionate action.  Led by Mark Yaconelli and Melissa Wiginton.

Individuals who participate in the program will:

  • Understand how stories function in our personal and public lives and as connectors with God's story.
  • Learn how to create transformative events (both online and in-person) that deepen relationships within a congregation or local community.
  • Explore narrative practices that promote healing, spiritual growth, social awareness, and community action.
  • Learn how to create a variety of story-sharing platforms that engender trust and vulnerability.
  • Learn how to craft inclusive stories for speaking, teaching, and facilitation.
  • Discover methods for amplifying the voices of people on the margins.

Online sessions will be two to two and a half hours each, held twice a day Monday-Thursday (9:30 am- Noon CT and 2:00-4:30 pm CT) and once on Friday (9:30 - Noon CT).
