Certificate in Jewish-Christian Relationship
The CJCR program has been an opportunity to learn more about another faith—one that we sometimes think we know all about. Especially helpful has been having, for most of the classes, a Christian teacher/leader and a Jewish teacher/leader. Our reading, conversations, videos, have shown us how we are different, how we are alike, and how we can learn from each other. My fellow classmates are insightful and thoughtful folks who have also taught me a lot through sharing their thoughts and experiences. It's been a good experience for me.

Are you troubled by the often violent history—past and present—that has plagued that relationship and yet hopeful for pathways of peace between these traditions? Do you seek deeper relationships with your neighbor as you grow together in understanding? Austin Seminary’s Certificate in Jewish-Christian Relationship (CJCR) is designed to explore these questions, to increase interfaith understanding, and to foster friendships across traditions. Courses are team taught on-line by clergy and professors from both traditions who model collaborative and creative learning through relationship.
What you'll learn
The basic certificate includes the following coursework:
Sacred Texts (1 course) Courses in this area emphasize the practice of reading biblical texts together and the new horizons that open when we listen to each other interpret these texts.
History and Theology (1 course) Courses in this area explore the development of these religious traditions over time, including the perennial - and changing - questions of faith.
Justice and Ethics (1 course) Courses in this area explore the question of the good life, ethical teachings of each tradition, the call to mend the world, and to love one’s neighbor. Courses in this area might include an intensive face-to-face session that includes a service project.
Worship (1 course) Courses in this area deepen students’ understanding and engagement of the worship life of each tradition. Courses in this area might include an intensive face-to-face session that involves exposure to liturgy in one or both traditions.
Program cost
Each course is $380; there is a one-time application fee of $25.
