Summer Reflection: Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

Summer Reflection: Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
"Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) has profoundly transformed not only the way I care for others, but also the way I understand God's presence in moments of suffering, uncertainty, and hope. Before beginning this journey, I believed that being present for people meant having the right words or offering immediate comfort. Through CPE, God has shown me that His greatest work often happens in sacred moments of listening, compassion, and simply being present with His people.

"CPE has challenged me to examine my own faith, biases, strengths, and vulnerabilities. It has taught me that pastoral care is not about fixing someone's pain, but about faithfully walking alongside them while trusting God to do the healing that only He can accomplish. Every patient encounter has become an opportunity to witness God's grace at work, even in hospital rooms filled with fear, grief, or uncertainty. I have learned that Christ's love is communicated not only through spoken prayers but also through attentive silence, genuine empathy, and unwavering presence.

"Serving as a chaplain at Houston Methodist has been both a privilege and a calling. Each day, I encounter individuals and families facing some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Whether celebrating answered prayers, comforting those who have received devastating news, or standing beside families as they say goodbye to a loved one, I have witnessed the remarkable faithfulness of God. The hospital has become sacred ground where heaven often feels close, and where God's peace can enter even the darkest circumstances.

"Being a chaplain has deepened my understanding that every person is created in the image of God and deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and unconditional love. Regardless of a person's background, beliefs, or circumstances, each encounter reminds me that we are all God's children, longing for hope, meaning, and connection. My role is to be an instrument of His love, extending His compassion without judgment and pointing others toward the comfort that only Christ can provide.

"One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that ministry is not confined to the walls of a church. The hospital is a mission field where God is continually at work through healthcare professionals, patients, families, and chaplains. I have seen physicians and nurses become vessels of God's healing hands, and I have witnessed patients minister to one another through acts of courage, forgiveness, and unwavering faith. These moments remind me that God is always present, even when His presence is not immediately recognized.

"As I continue this journey, I carry with me a renewed commitment to serve God's people with humility, compassion, and grace. CPE has equipped me not only with pastoral skills but with a deeper dependence on God and a greater appreciation for the sacred privilege of walking with others through life's most significant moments. My prayer is that every conversation, every prayer, every silent presence, and every act of kindness will reflect the love of Jesus Christ. May my ministry always glorify God, strengthen His people, and remind every person I encounter that they are deeply loved, never alone, and forever held in the hands of our faithful Savior."
