Ordination Resources
While many of our students come from PCUSA congregations, our student body represents a wide range of denominations. Whether you know what tradition you’d like to be ordained into or are exploring different denominations, the resources below will give you information about the ordination requirements of various denominations. The first step in any ordination process is to choose a church and become a member of that church, so if you are not already affiliated, choosing a church by the end of your first semester in seminary is a great goal. Most mainline denomination ordination processes take at least two to three years to complete, so the ideal timeline is to begin your ordination process before you start seminary.
When registering for classes, you will want to learn whether your denominational body:
-
Expects you to take Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
-
Wants to choose a Supervised Practice of Ministry (SPM) site for you.
-
Requires any denomination-specific classes (eg. Liturgy, polity—often these can be taken online)
-
Requires a year at a denomination’s own seminary in addition to your work at Austin Seminary
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to the Director of the Office of Ministerial Formation and Advancement at omfas@austinseminary.edu.
