Artsy Theology: Mixing Art and Theology for Ministry, Mission, Worship, and Christian Education

Learn how to use art for ministry. This workshop is designed for ministers, Christian educators, small group leaders, youth ministers, and mission team leaders. No art experience necessary.

This hands-on “art for the non-artist” workshop teaches you how to use basic art techniques as part of your ministry—whether it is local or global mission and evangelism, worship, VBS, 12-step recovery groups, or for special services of worship, such as Ash Wednesday, Taizé, and Way of the Cross.

Presenter: Jennifer Graber, Associate Professor, University of Texas, Department of Religious Studies

Professor Graber works on religion and violence in American prisons and on the American frontier. Her first book, The Furnace of Affliction: Prisons and Religion in Antebellum America, explores the intersection of church and state during the founding of the nation's first prisons. Her current project focuses on religious transformations in Indian and settler communities in a part of Indian Territory over the course of the nineteenth century.

Participants will practice communicating respectfully across differences; develop greater self-awareness and recognize their own cultural formation; lean to decode power dynamics in relation to different groups of people; and study scripture and do theological reflection from multiple cultural perspectives.

A day of theological education for Hispanic pastors and church leaders to explore the transformative power of the miracles of God as performed by Jesus Christ in the midst of meagerness and abundance. You will reflect on the significance of reenacting the miracles of God in the everyday struggles of Hispanic natives and new immigrants in the US borderlands. This workshop is conducted in Spanish.
