The British Museum, Empire, and the Making of the Biblical Scholar in the Nineteenth Century”

Dr. Gregory Cuéllar, will discuss his new book which introduces questions of power and empire to one of the foremost master-archives for the study of the Bible in the English-speaking world, the British Museum. He will trace how the nation’s master-archive helped to reproduce elite forms of power and the negation of the human “Other.” Participants will leave with a better understanding of the harmful effects which the archival truth-making enterprise has had upon biblical scholarship.
