Austin Seminary Approved to Continue to Prepare United Methodists for Ordination

At its meeting on June 17, 2024, upon recommendation of the Commission on Theological Education, the United Methodist University Senate designated Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary as Approved for Listing for the preparation of candidates for ordination in the United Methodist Church Without Qualification. This decision acknowledges Austin Seminary’s work and commitment to United Methodist theological education.

For an institution to be recognized as affiliated with the United Methodist Church, it must first receive approval from the UMC University Senate. To achieve this affiliation, institutions need to uphold their academic accreditation, provide excellent instruction in fundamental disciplines, and embody values that align with those of the United Methodist Church. These values include fostering leadership skills for evangelism, supporting local congregations, promoting racial and gender inclusiveness, and encouraging ecumenical and interfaith cooperation.

Austin Seminary is proud of its rich history of educating and equipping United Methodist candidates for ordination. Dean of Enrollment and United Methodist Elder Reverend JD Herrera says, “This affirmation from the University Senate encapsulates what my clergy peers in South Central Texas and I have known for decades: Austin Seminary is our seminary. Established in the mission outpost of Texas 12 years before Brite, 52 years before Perkins, and 89 years before Truett, Austin Seminary is and will continue to be the seminary of Texas. As a proud UMC alum of the Seminary and an Elder serving my alma mater, I am thankful to be part of this valuable resource to Methodists and all our siblings of faith in Texas and the church universal.”

Austin Seminary President José R. Irizarry affirms the Seminary’s commitment to United Methodist students and recognizes the significance of their contributions to the Austin Seminary community, saying, “We are greatly enriched by the contributions of Methodist students, church leaders, and staff to fulfilling our shared mission. Austin Seminary values its longstanding partnership with the United Methodist Church and looks forward to preserving its commitment to equipping leaders for this sister denomination shaped by the Wesleyan heritage and well-versed in the church’s social witness and discipline.”
