Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak spent the better part of last week trying to hold onto his power. Until about mid-week, the U.S. remained somewhat neutral about his ouster. Then, the Obama administration said it was time for him to go, which naturally didn't sit well with Mubarak. He was upset because his government had long seen the U.S. as a supporter. The Mubarak question is an age-old one in foreign policy, which thinkers like Reinhold Niebuhr and Hans Morgenthau have touched upon: How far should the U.S. go in dealing with unsavory characters to achieve a larger goal? This week, the Texas Faith Panel, including Austin Seminary's Cynthia Rigby, answer this question: If you were advising President Barack Obama, how would you recommend he deal with leaders with questionable records, including on human rights, who also advance our foreign policy goals?
