Biographical Note: Lawrence Hay Wharton (1892-1937), a Presbyterian minister and educator, spent the majority of his short career in Austin, Texas, where he held a pastorate at University Presbyterian Church and taught Homiletics at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary (APTS). Wharton earned his Bachelor of Divinity degree from APTS in 1914. Previous to his work in Austin, Wharton held a pastorate at First Presbyterian Church in Laredo, Texas, from 1914-1922, with a year’s interruption while serving with the YMCA in World War I. Wharton began at University Presbyterian Church in 1922 and at APTS in 1925, and held these positions while simultaneously earning degrees at the University of Texas and Daniel Baker college, and organizing the annual Synod’s Young People Conference until his sudden death in 1937 at age 45. Wharton’s older brother, Conway T. Wharton, assumed his posts at University Presbyterian Church and APTS upon his death.

Scope and Contents: One foot and three inches of sermons and lecture material documents Lawrence Hay Wharton’s (1892-1937) career as a pastor and professor in Austin, Texas. The bulk of the collection is comprised of chronologically arranged sermons preached at University Presbyterian Church. Roughly one inch of material relates to Wharton’s tenure as professor of Homiletics at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. The collection represents the work of two creators, and is therefore arranged in two sub-groups: Lawrence Hay Wharton Papers, 1926-1937, and Conway T. Wharton Papers, 1937-1958. All but half an inch of material was created by Lawrence Hay Wharton, the primary creator.

Sermons cover a variety of topics, but many focus on college life or the religious challenges of young people, reflecting the prominent presence of students in the congregation due to the church’s proximity to the University of Texas. Several of the sermons, which bulk in the mid-1930s, touch on the economic hardship of the times. Sermons are individually sleeved, and are labeled by the Bible chapter or verse on which they are based unless they exist as a group for which Wharton created an index. In the case of groups, which sometimes span several folders, the index precedes the sermons in the first folder of the group.

One half inch of undated lecture material relates to Wharton’s role as a professor of Homiletics at APTS. Included in this material is a translation of Wharton’s notes into Chinese, which a former student requested and used while serving as a missionary in China. The half inch of class and lecture material in the Conway T. Wharton Papers sub-group reflects Conway’s assumption of Lawrence’s professorial post when Lawrence died in January of 1937, halfway through the school year. Four leaves of student grade information from 1937-1938 and 1939-1940 were removed from Conway’s class and lecture materials, and placed in a restricted folder which may not be accessed until 2017 and 2019, respectively, for privacy reasons.

Restrictions: Materials are available by appointment only. A small amount of student grade information is restricted until 2017 and 2019. Contact the archivist for details.
