Biographical Note: James Allen Smith (1928-1993) was a Presbyterian minister in Texas and Arkansas. Smith was born in Houston, Texas but raised in Chinkiang, China by his missionary parents. The family returned to the states in 1940 and Smith went to the University of Texas at Austin to study English and Greek in 1945. He earned his Master’s of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1952 and his Doctor of Ministry from the same institution in 1988. He served churches in Refugio, Texas (1953-1956), LaMarque, Texas (1956-1962), and Sherman, Texas (1962-1967) before serving as the campus minister for Austin College (1967-1975), where he also earned a Doctor of Divinity degree (1976). In 1975 he became the pastor at the Second Presbyterian Church of Little Rock, Arkansas, where he served until his death in 1992.

Scope and Contents: This collection consists of first, second and, in some cases, third drafts of sermons as edited for the book A Sovereignty of Grace: A Collection of Sermons by J. Allen Smith. These sermons were all originally preached by Smith at the Second Presbyterian Church of Little Rock, Arkansas. The sermons were transcribed and edited by Victor A. Fleming from original recordings of the sermons as given by Smith. Fleming donated the manuscripts to the Austin Seminary Archives in 1992.
