Repository: Austin Seminary Archives at the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary

Biographical Note: James Mason Sedgwick (1876-1926), a Presbyterian minister, was born in Texas in 1876. Sedgwick studied Theology at Austin College and Union Theological Seminary from 1899 until 1902, when he was licensed and ordained. Sedgwick was active in the ministry and church leadership, serving at several churches throughout the South in addition to serving as stated clerk of the Abingdon Presbytery, Appalachia Synod, and Fort Worth Presbytery.

Scope and Contents: One foot, eight inches and one volume comprised of sermons and sermon material, printed material, handwritten notes, minutes, correspondence, and a scrapbook (1900-1925) document the ministerial career and the preaching style of James Mason Sedgwick. Material is divided in two series: Ministerial Papers, 1900-1925, and General, 1938.

The bulk of the material resides in series I, Ministerial Papers, 1900-1925. The series is subdivided into three sub-series: Preaching Material, 1900-1925, Printed Material, 1915-1924, and Presbytery of Forth Worth, 1922-1925. All material in this series is theological in nature and relates to Sedgwick’s career as a minister and an active member of the Presbyterian Church. Preaching Material, 1900-1925, is comprised primarily of numbered sermons. Sermons are in numerical and chronological order, though some of the sermons in the set are missing, unaccounted for at the time of transfer. Within folders, each sermon is housed in its own paper enclosure, occasionally with related research material including clippings from theological publications, on which Sedgwick appears to have relied heavily. The remaining material in the sub-series includes other material Sedgwick would have used during services, including unnumbered sermons, invocations, and prayers. Printed Material, 1915-1924, contains printed theological material collected by Sedgwick, including pamphlets, book marks, loose clippings from periodicals, and a scrapbook full of clippings often accompanied by notes or responses from Sedgwick. Material in the Presbytery of Forth Worth, 1922-1925, sub-series relates to Sedgwick’s time as stated clerk of the Presbytery of Forth Worth. The material is routine, two sets of minutes and a few pieces of correspondence listing the agenda for the forthcoming meeting.

The second series, General, 1938, is comprised of one item: a small book on the “Wonders of the World,” which is missing its cover.

Restrictions: Materials are available by appointment only. Contact the archivist for details.
