Biographical Note: William Ramseur Minter (1873-1943), a Presbyterian pastor in the Carolinas and Texas, was born in South Carolina on July 9, 1873. Minter attended Davidson College in South Carolina in the 1870s, and was licensed as a preacher in the Presbytery of Enorce in South Carolina in 1896. After serving in churches throughout the Carolinas, Minter accepted a call to the First Southern Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas in 1917, where the much-loved minister had a long and illustrious career. Minter retired to a small congregation in Palestine, Texas near the end of his life, and died in 1943.

Scope and Contents: Four inches and one volume of correspondence, pastoral calls, sermon and printed material (1896-1942) document the ministerial career of William Ramseur Minter. The collection is arranged in two series: Ministerial Papers (1896-1942) and Printed Material (1897-1936). Ministerial Papers (1896-1943), the first and most voluminous series, records Minter’s popularity and successes as a pastor and preacher. The correspondence is comprised primarily of unofficial calls and requests for Minter’s services as a preacher, and the pastoral calls reveal bidding wars between several congregations who wished to have Minter as their pastor. Other material in this series, including several years’ worth of sermons and sermon notes, relates to Minter’s tenure at churches in Lincolnton, N.C., Austin, Texas, and Palestine, Texas. Material in the second series, Printed Material (1897-1936), is comprised primarily of photocopies of newspaper articles written by or about Minter.

Materials in accession #2007-009 were originally held at the Montreat office of the Presbyterian Historical Society. They were transferred to the Austin Seminary Archives in 2007.
