Biographical Note: Charles Edwin McStravick (1861-1941), a Presbyterian pastor, was born in Illinois in 1861. McStravick studied at Monmouth College in Illinois and Xenia Theological Seminary in Ohio from 1895-1900. After his ordination in 1900, McStravick served at churches throughout the United States, primarily in Ohio, Illinois and Texas until his retirement in 1941. McStravick worked with the Home Missions Board, establishing in 1911 several United Presbyterian Churches in San Antonio, TX. A devoted and hardworking pastor, McStravick was elected Moderator of the United Presbyterian Synod of Ohio in 1909 and Moderator of the United Presbyterian Synod of Kansas in 1931. Upon retirement, the Home Missions Board sent McStravick to Catarina, TX to serve as temporary supply. McStravick served out his remaining days in Catarina with his second wife, until his death in September of 1941.

Scope and Contents: Two feet of sermon outlines, lectures, and correspondence, and ten volumes of seminary notebooks (1898-1941) document the pastoral career of Charles Edwin McStravick. The collection is arranged in three series: Sermon Outlines, 1898-1941; General, 1898-1917; Seminary Notebooks, undated.

The first series, Sermon Outlines, comprises the bulk of the collection. The sermon outlines, which were removed from binders, reveal McStravick’s method of preaching and preparation. The outlines list three to five main talking points with sub-points, and are arranged in folders according to topic. Information on the place and date the sermon was preached is handwritten on the back of each outline. General, the second series, contains four handwritten lectures completed as part of seminary coursework, routine correspondence of a personal and professional nature, a pamphlet, and some notes on poems and sermons. The third series, Seminary Notebooks, is comprised of ten volumes of notes on a handful of topics created in the course of seminary study.

Restrictions: Materials are available by appointment only. Contact the archivist for details.
