Currie Lectures“Grace-filled Economy: The Way Around the Ethic of Scarcity Toward the Ethic of Enough”Elizabeth Hinson-HastyThe unequal distribution of wealth, patterns of consumption, and ecological devastation have received a great deal of attention in recent years. All too often we approach these overwhelming problems from an ethic of scarcity, the idea that we need to protect our own interests and resources out of fear that there will be some point that we do not have enough. Three lectures will develop a technologically rich and biblically informed vision for grace-filled economy, one based upon shared partnership and characterized by sharing, satisfaction with enough, mutuality, reciprocity, love, and justice. PreacherKarl TravisTravis, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Fort Worth, will lead us in worship on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

Jones Lectures“Sojourner’s Truths”Margaret AymerLecture 1: The New Testament as Migrant Writings Lecture 2: Migrant Writing as Scripture Westervelt Lectures“The Last Shall be First: Ecclesiology as Initial Theological Problem”Joseph SmallEcclesiology—the doctrine of the church—is a theological afterthought, too often reduced to improbable ideal or embarrassing sociology. The absence of a fully theological awareness of the church leads to its institutional marketing as a purveyor of religious goods and services. Who, what, when, where, why, and how in the world is the “one holy catholic apostolic church”? Two lectures will point toward congregational, denominational, and ecumenical answers. |
